The engine hums with the memory of miles, the air still carries the faint scent of stale coffee and gasoline, but my mind is alight with the experiences of the past few days. From September 9th to 12th, 2024, my exceptional coworker and dear friend Tasi, and my rock, my best friend and coworker Shelby, and I embarked on a grand road trip from Abilene to Atlanta for an important IHG Sales Conference. This wasn’t just a work trip; it was an odyssey, a testament to endurance, a deep dive into urban exploration, and a stark reminder of nature’s unpredictable power.
Day 1: The Long Haul East – Through Unseen Landscapes
Our journey began as many do, with the wide-open expanse of West Texas giving way to the changing landscapes of the South. We left Abilene, set our sights east, and drove straight through, pushing mile after mile. The hours blurred, marked by the rhythmic drone of the highway and the shifting scenery.
Our sustenance stop brought us to Azteca Grill in Monroe, Louisiana. It was a welcome break, a chance to stretch our legs and refuel with some hearty Mexican-inspired cuisine. The food was satisfying, providing the necessary energy for the long haul ahead. But beyond the food, this stretch of the drive, particularly navigating through the deeper, less-traveled southern parts of the U.S., offered a glimpse into facets of America that are rarely highlighted. There were moments of stark, unvarnished reality, sights that confirmed prejudices, and profound economic disparities visible from the highway. Without going into explicit detail, let’s just say we saw some things that no one should see, deeply ingrained realities of poverty and struggle that cast a somber shadow on the landscape. It was a sobering reminder of the complex layers of our nation, a stark contrast to the urban vibrancy we were headed towards.
We finally pulled into Atlanta late at night, utterly exhausted from the continuous driving, but ready for the promise of the vibrant city.
Day 2: Atlanta’s Embrace – Parks, Markets, and a Pulse of Urban Renewal
We woke up at our hotel, the comfortable Crowne Plaza Atlanta Perimeter, feeling refreshed and ready to explore. After an amazing breakfast that properly fueled our bodies and spirits, we plunged into the heart of Atlanta’s dynamic urban core, witnessing a city that pulses with a unique blend of Southern charm and modern ambition.
- Piedmont Park: Our first stop was Piedmont Park, Atlanta’s sprawling urban oasis. It’s a magnificent green space, reminiscent of Central Park, offering breathtaking views of the city skyline. We strolled along its paths, watching people exercise, relax, and enjoy the crisp morning air. The park feels like the lungs of the city, a place where nature and urban life harmoniously intertwine, providing a vital sense of serenity amidst the city’s bustle.
- Ponce City Market: This was a true highlight, a vibrant hub of culinary and retail innovation housed within a beautifully repurposed historic building. Ponce City Market, once a Sears, Roebuck & Co. retail distribution center, has been transformed into a massive, bustling mixed-use development. We wandered through its expansive halls, mesmerized by the array of food stalls offering everything from gourmet burgers to artisanal ice cream, unique boutiques selling local crafts, and bustling eateries. It’s a testament to adaptive reuse and urban renewal, creating a lively atmosphere where history meets modernity. The aromas were intoxicating, a constant invitation to sample.
- Krog Street Tunnel: From the polished charm of Ponce City Market, we ventured to the raw, edgy artistry of Krog Street Tunnel. This iconic underpass is a constantly evolving canvas for Atlanta’s vibrant street art scene. Every inch of its concrete walls is covered in layers upon layers of graffiti, murals, political statements, and tags, creating a dynamic, ever-changing visual spectacle. It’s loud, colorful, and a powerful expression of urban creativity and counter-culture, providing a stark, fascinating contrast to the manicured parks.
- Millennium Gate Museum: Our day of exploration ended at the Millennium Gate Museum, a beautiful triumphal arch designed to represent the history of peaceful accomplishment in Georgia. Its classical architecture, though perhaps a bit out of place in its immediate surroundings, offered a moment of quiet reflection on historical grandeur and civic ambition.
Atlanta truly felt alive, a city undergoing a dynamic transformation, constantly blending its historical roots with a forward-looking energy.
Day 3 & 4: The IHG Sales Conference – Insights for the Hospitality Hive
The core purpose of our trip was the IHG Sales Conference. These two days were a deep dive into the evolving landscape of the hospitality industry, particularly focusing on extended-stay hotels, a segment that has seen significant growth and innovation. As someone who manages hotels and has been deeply involved in this industry post-healthcare, these conferences are vital for staying ahead of the curve.
We spent intensive hours in sessions, workshops, and networking events, absorbing a wealth of information. Some key takeaways relevant to extended-stay hotels included:
- Optimizing the Guest Experience for Longer Stays: Learning about new design trends that prioritize comfort, functionality, and a “home-away-from-home” feel (e.g., larger kitchenettes, flexible workspaces, pet-friendly amenities).
- Leveraging Technology for Seamless Service: Exploring new reservation systems, mobile check-in/checkout, smart room technology, and AI-driven guest communication to enhance efficiency and personalization for long-term guests.
- Understanding Evolving Business Travel Needs: Discussing how remote work trends, project-based assignments, and corporate relocation programs are reshaping demand for extended-stay accommodations.
- Targeted Marketing and Sales Strategies: Deep dives into data analytics to identify key market segments (e.g., corporate travelers, relocating families, medical patients) and developing tailored sales pitches and loyalty programs.
- Operational Efficiencies for Extended Stays: Sharing best practices for managing housekeeping, maintenance, and guest services for guests staying weeks or months, ensuring consistent quality and cost-effectiveness.
- Sustainability Initiatives: Exploring how extended-stay properties can implement eco-friendly practices and appeal to environmentally conscious travelers.
These conferences are invaluable. They’re where insights are shared, strategies are refined, and the collective hive of IHG management collaborates to elevate the guest experience. It’s always exhausting but incredibly informative and motivating.
The Long Road Home: A Hurricane’s Aftermath and Grateful Relief
With the conference wrapped and our minds buzzing with new ideas, we began the long drive back to Abilene. The return journey, however, brought an unexpected, sobering challenge. We ran directly into the aftermath of Hurricane Francine. The storm, which had recently made landfall in the Gulf, had carved a path of significant disruption.
We found ourselves facing flooded roads, downed trees, and widespread power outages as we tried to navigate through affected areas. The drive became slow, cautious, and incredibly tense. The skies were grey and ominous, and the roads, often littered with debris, made progress difficult. It was a stark reminder of nature’s raw, unpredictable power, and a humbling experience after days spent in climate-controlled conference rooms.
The conditions became too challenging to continue safely, forcing us to make an unplanned stop. We ended up having to stay the night in Shreveport, Louisiana, finding what refuge we could amidst the storm’s lingering effects. It was a weary, unexpected end to our eastward travel.
Now, finally, after those long miles, the weather challenges, and the professional insights, I am profoundly glad to be home. My own bed, the familiar comforts of my space, and the peace of Abilene are a welcome embrace. This trip was a marathon, a journey through diverse landscapes—both physical and professional—and a testament to the strength of friendship and the enduring spirit of adventure.
